These stories describe experiences with trauma, exploitation, and abuse. If you are a survivor experiencing crisis, please reach out to the National Sexual Assault Hotline (1-800-656-4673) or Crisis Text Line (text HOME to 741741).
Each story represents a real survivor's journey. Names and identifying details have been changed to protect privacy. These narratives demonstrate how understanding the neurobiology of trauma and accessing specialized support can facilitate healing.
"I thought I was talking to someone my age, but it turned out to be an adult who was manipulating me through Instagram. The algorithm kept recommending his accounts even after I blocked him."
I was 15 when I met someone online who seemed to understand me. We talked for weeks on Instagram, and he gradually convinced me to share intimate photos. When I tried to stop, he threatened to share them with my friends and family. I felt trapped and couldn't tell anyone. The shame and fear consumed me. I developed severe anxiety and couldn't sleep. My nervous system was in constant fight-or-flight mode. When I finally told my parents, they helped me report it, but the psychological damage took years to heal. Through Begin Again's trauma-response training and sensory coaching, I learned that my hypervigilance was a normal response to violation. Understanding my nervous system helped me reclaim my body and my sense of safety.
Most survivors experienced hyperarousal, hypervigilance, and difficulty regulating their nervous systems after tech-related trauma. Understanding these responses as protective mechanisms, not personal failures, was crucial to healing.
Survivors noted how social media algorithms amplified harmful content, normalized exploitation, and created echo chambers that deepened trauma. Understanding algorithmic manipulation helped reduce shame.
Many survivors internalized blame for their exploitation, not understanding how their developing brains were targeted. Education about grooming tactics and neurobiology reduced shame significantly.
Survivors benefited most from comprehensive approaches addressing trauma response, sensory regulation, and creative expression. Nervous system-focused interventions were particularly effective.
